Frequently Asked Questions about DNA Testing

Why do you run every DNA test twice?

We take pride in the quality and integrity of our DNA testing to make sure that the results are accurate. The ultimate quality assurance programme runs samples twice and double-checks the results to provide the confidence that the paternity test results you receive are correct.

Can you send a DNA testing kit to me discreetly?

Yes, we can. The DNA testing kit fits in a standard size envelope and will be sent to any address you request. We realise this DNA testing is not for public display, so "Paternity Testing" is not displayed. The envelope simply says "Personal & Confidential".

Does the mother need to be tested to achieve an accurate paternity test result?

No. Paternity testing involves comparison of the DNA of the child to the DNA of the alleged father, so the mother's participation is not necessary. Having the mother's sample allows the DNA testing lab to get a clear picture of which half of the child's DNA came from the father. The testing is always 100% accurate, but a paternity test with the mother can result in a higher probability of paternity.

What is a mouth swab, and is it as accurate as blood?

A mouth swab looks like a long cotton wool bud. It is used to gather cheek cells from the inside of your mouth. DNA is consistent throughout the body, so the DNA in your cheeks cells is identical to the DNA in blood cells. The mouth swab allows for non-invasive and painless DNA collection for DNA testing.

How do I know that I'm collecting my DNA test samples correctly?

We enclose simple, easy to understand instructions for collecting cheek cells. If you follow the instructions carefully, there is no need for you to be concerned with making mistakes. Our concerns are ensuring that you are collecting enough cells for DNA testing; you are collecting a sample from the appropriate person; and you are labelling the specimens correctly.

What if the two possible fathers are related?

Both men should be paternity tested at the same time, if possible. Relatives share similar DNA patterns, and we would need to perform enough DNA testing to exclude one of them. If only one alleged father is available for paternity testing, it is important that our laboratory be told of the situation so that additional DNA testing can be conducted to ensure accurate paternity test results.
